09:00 Departure from Valladolid/Salamanca in the direction of Toro to start our tour of the beautiful city.
10:00 We start the visit at the visitor reception centre in Toro, where we will meet our group coordinator to visit the wine museum, where we will start a journey through the history of Toro wine over the centuries.
At the end of the visit we will have a tasting of a DO Toro wine and a tapa.
12:00 We will visit a historic winery, the winery of the old Brotherhood of Farmers, located in Cerrada Street, today owned by the Agricultural Board of Toro or Agricultural Chamber. It was already in existence in 1652 and is known by its nickname of La Niña Bonita de las bodegas toresanas (The Pretty Girl of Toro's wine cellars). It consists of several naves on different levels and spaces, and perfectly preserves the wine press and the production area.
It houses the Bodega Histórica del Vino de Toro, a centre for the interpretation and promotion of the wines of Toro, its history, its uses and customs and its many historical and social aspects. Also of the territory, the vine and the Tinta de Toro, the fruit that gives identity to the wines of Toro.
12:30 Afterwards we will have a tasting of four of our wines accompanied by a board of local sausages.
The traditional wineries of Toro are a magnificent testimony to determine the identity of a city linked to the vine and wine since ancient times. The people of Toro have historically dedicated themselves to the cultivation of vines and the production and marketing of wine, and the most tangible proof of this are these traditional and historic cellars. The wine cellars of Toro are excavated under the buildings of which they form part, with stables and bread bakeries in the spaces that made up, in addition to the living quarters, the farmhouses from the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 20th century.
Hundreds of underground uses, often splendid and sometimes very humble, can be seen in any street or square, to the point that the most common type of civil architecture in Toro is that which includes a ventilator or zarzera in the elevation of the façade of the building. This architectural element is the terrestrial evidence that the wealth of wine was for centuries a social, economic and urbanistic agent of the first order that strengthened even more the historical and strategic importance that the city has had throughout the centuries.
